People with sciatica often describe it as an electric shock, a burning line or a deep toothache that runs from the lower back or buttock down the back of one leg. Sitting can be miserable, and getting comfortable in bed even harder.
The encouraging news: most sciatica improves on its own within weeks to a few months. In the meantime, gifts that make sitting, sleeping and gentle movement more comfortable are genuinely welcome.
What is sciatica?
Sciatica isn't a diagnosis in itself. It's a description of symptoms caused by irritation or compression of the sciatic nerve, the longest nerve in the body, which runs from the lower spine through the buttock and down each leg. Typical signs include:
- Pain radiating from the lower back or buttock down one leg, sometimes to the foot
- Numbness, tingling or "pins and needles" in the leg or foot
- Pain that's worse when sitting, coughing or sneezing
What causes sciatica?
- A herniated (slipped) disc. The most common cause. The soft center of a spinal disc pushes out and presses on a nerve root.
- Spinal stenosis. Narrowing of the spinal canal, more common with age.
- Bone spurs and arthritis in the lower spine.
- Tight muscles in the buttock. The piriformis muscle can irritate the nerve where it passes nearby.
- Pregnancy, when the shifting load and the baby's position can press on the nerve.
What helps sciatica?
Get urgent medical help for numbness around the groin, buttocks or inner thighs, new difficulty controlling the bladder or bowels, or leg weakness that's getting worse. These are rare but can signal a serious nerve problem. See a doctor if pain is severe, follows an injury, or isn't improving after a few weeks.
