Books for People with Back Pain

MIND OVER BACK PAIN

This is the book that has given thousands of sufferers new hope — a gentle, effective way to find real relief from back pain, without painkillers, without surgery, without spending days on end in bed.

Dr. John Sarno’s revolutionary approach to back pain is based on his discovery that tension is the underlying cause of most back problems–leading to an often unrecognized condition called Tension Mytosis Syndrome. In this book–the first to explain the psychophysiology, manifestations, and treatment of TMS — you’ll find clear steps, sensible advice, and simple illustrations to help you find relief, prevent future pain…and live life fully once again.

“This is a great book. I was told by my PT that my back was delicate, and had been filled with fear and dread about being permanently disabled. I read this book while riding a bus for 5 hours, in a seat that should have crippled me. I got off the bus pain free and have been pain free since. I want to thank Dr. Sarno for giving me my life back. As to the naysayers; Dr. Sarno is the first to state that there are SOMETIMES other causes of back pain that are not TMS. But had debilitating, tension-related siatica; I am not a hypochondriac; I hate doctors and 5 months of PT has been awful. Buy this very inexpensive book and read it with an open mind. What have you got to lose? I got my life back.”

“I have suffered from back pain and siatica for 10 months. A friend bought me this book for Christmas. As I read it, my pain literally vanished (and on a bus ride, sitting in a seat that should have put me in a wheelchair according to my PT). It sounds too good to be true, but it is true. Buy this book…what have you got to lose?”

8 STEPS TO A PAIN-FREE BACK

Nearly 90% of American adults suffer from back pain, and the number continues to climb. Why does this condition affect so many people in the industrialized world, while in some countries only 5% of adults report back pain? In a quest to find the root cause of back pain, Esther Gokhale studied at the Aplomb Institute in Paris and traveled to parts of the world where back pain is virtually unknown. Her research took her to remote Burkina Faso, rural Portugal, and fishing villages in Brazil.

What she learned in each of these places has changed the lives of thousands of people. Preserved in the movements of weavers, millers, and farmers in more traditional societies is ancient body wisdom that prevents pain and enhances health. For the first time, these insights have been brought together in a step-by-step guide designed to help those suffering from back pain re-educate their bodies and regain the posture for which our bodies evolved.

Esther Gokhale’s book ‘8 Steps to a Pain Free Back’ is a marvel. At first glance it appears to be just another self help book on how to relieve common back pain. Upon reading it however, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this is the most comprehensive and helpful book I have yet come across. Gokhale’s technique which is grounded in sound anthropological study as she explains, our back problems are largely the result of our cultural habits. Apparently, only five to ten percent of people in certain other countries suffer from back pain, yet in American that number jumps to almost ninety percent. Why such a difference? Ms. Gokhale explains that poor habits and incorrect training are to blame and her technique for proper posture goes way beyond conventional American teachings. A victim of debilitating back pain and surgery herself, Ms. Gokhale both understands the pain many of us are going through, and genuinely wants to help. Her book is wonderfully illustrated with the most specific ‘how to’ techniques I have encountered. …
